In just five seasons at the helm, University of Vermont men’s basketball head coach John Becker has emerged as a rising star in college basketball. His resume with the Catamounts is impressive – four straight 20-win seasons, four straight postseason appearances, and America East Championship, an America East Regular Season crown, and an NCAA Tournament win.
Becker led Vermont to a record of 24-12 overall in his rookie year, an America East Championship and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Catamounts defeated Lamar 71-59 in the First Four, marking Vermont’s second-ever NCAA win and only the seventh in America East history. UVM advanced to the second round where it fell to No. 1 seed North Carolina.
In his second year, Vermont continued to make defense and rebounding its trademarks under Becker. The Catamounts ranked 29th nationally in scoring defense (59.2 ppg) and 47th in rebounding margin (+4.4).
During his third season Vermont accumulated a 15-1 record in league play and captured the program’s first America East Regular Season Championship. The Catamounts won their league games by an average of 22 points per game.
